Gen Con 2015: The Approach

I took Brewin’ USA to Gen Con this year for the first time as a self-publisher with the goal to share with anybody willing to play.  I felt a little bit like a small fish in a big pond, setting out as one man and his game.  My main goal was to figure out how to approach Gen Con 2016, but I was also very eager to connect with both gamers and industry veterans.  I was a little late to commit to Gen Con 2015 and register for 8 events but managed to get 4 events approved on the Friday.  These 4 events filled up very quickly from some Kickstarter backers and people browsing the events catalog.  In an effort to get more people into Brewin’ USA, I created a google spreadsheet and advertised via twitter / Facebook / BGG making myself time and location flexible on Thursday and Saturday.  This somewhat rogue pick-up game approach seemed to resonate pretty well and I was able to teach Brewin’ USA to an additional 6 groups!

The Beer:

Gen Con doesn’t allow alcohol consumption on its grounds which is cool with me, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that games would walk 15 mins to Tow Yard Brewing to get some Brewin’ USA going.  The Tow Yard Brewing staff was totally digging it taking pictures of us playing a beer board game in their brewery and taproom!  I also was even more surprised that 3 gamers that showed up were actual industry Brewers (Indiana and Pennsylvania).  We shared pitchers from Tow Yard as well as beer that one Brewer brought from his pilot line, very cool!  Sun King Brewing again hosted the official beer of Gen Con 2015 – Drink On and Prosper.  It was a blond ale but tasted pretty red to my palette.

The People:

Hands down my best moments of Gen Con 2015 were teaching Brewin’ USA and interacting with other beer enthusiasts.  Not only was the game play reinvigorating to me, but I heard resounding positive feedback from gamers.  The one thing that took me aback was hearing multiple Kickstarter Backers complement me on the way the project was run.  I am 100% glad I made an effort to make pick-up games available and will make sure to schedule more events for next year!  Also, the new #Brewmaster card made a few appearances as seen on the Brewin’ USA facebook page.

As one of the Kickstarter backers that got to play Brewin’ USA at GenCon, I want to say how happy I was that you brought the game to the Con and made time to let us play it. It was a ton of fun, and more than justified my decision to back the game. It was definitely one of the highlights of my GenCon trip. Can’t wait to get my copy in the mail.

It was a blast to teach Brewin’ USA and thank you so much for signing up to play! We should plan on linking up for a beer next Gen Con if you’re attending :).

As someone who did not back this on KS (I didn’t find out about it until the campaign had closed) but purchased through the website, do we have an idea of when these retail copies will be shipped?

Hi Josh – Thanks so much for purchasing through the website. I sent out an email recently detailing the newest delivery timing. If everything goes to schedule then copies should be delivered in December 2016.
